The Clarity You Need, the Care You Deserve: Advanced Breast Ultrasound
Breast Ultrasound Services: Safe, Targeted, and Radiation-Free
At Corley Radiology, we understand that every woman’s breast tissue is unique. While mammography remains the gold standard for breast health, it is sometimes just the first step. Our specialized breast ultrasound services provide a safe, radiation-free way to look deeper, offering unparalleled clarity for dense breast tissue or specific areas of concern.
Led by Dr. Lauren Corley, our team balances advanced diagnostic precision with the warm, human-centered care you deserve. We are here to ensure you leave your appointment with clear answers and complete peace of mind.
How Breast Ultrasound Enhances Your Care
An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves—completely free of radiation—to produce real-time images of the internal structures of the breast. It serves as a vital supplemental tool in distinct ways.
Focused Diagnostic Evaluation
If you or your doctor have noticed a specific lump, localized tenderness, or an inconsistency on a recent mammogram, a targeted ultrasound allows us to focus directly on that area.
- Clear Distinction: Ultrasound is exceptionally skilled at determining whether a lump is a solid mass or a fluid-filled, harmless cyst.
- Instant Guidance: Because the imaging is dynamic and real-time, it gives our clinical team an immediate, highly detailed look at the area of concern without any discomfort or radiation exposure.
Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) for Dense Breasts
Up to 40% of women have dense breast tissue. On a traditional mammogram, dense tissue appears white—and so do potential abnormalities, which can sometimes make finding small tumors like looking for a snowball in a blizzard.
To solve this, Corley Radiology offers Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS), a cutting-edge screening technology specifically FDA-approved for women with dense breasts.
- Seeing the Whole Picture: Unlike a handheld ultrasound which targets one specific spot, ABUS automatically scans the entire breast volume.
- Closing the Gap: When used alongside your annual mammogram, ABUS provides a thorough, layer-by-layer evaluation that catches early-stage abnormalities mammography alone might miss.
What to Expect During Your Visit
We design our patient experience to be as relaxing and straightforward as possible:
- Comfort First: You will rest comfortably on a warm examination table. A highly trained, compassionate sonographer will apply a clear, water-based gel to the breast area to help the sound waves travel smoothly.
- Gentle Imaging: For a targeted exam, a handheld wand (transducer) is gently moved over the skin. For an ABUS screening, a contoured scanner is positioned firmly but comfortably over the breast for about one minute per side.
- Expert Interpretation: Your images are directly reviewed by Dr. Corley, ensuring your results are interpreted with the highest level of expert, localized care.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Ultrasound is a supplemental tool, not a replacement. Mammograms and ultrasounds look at breast tissue differently; using them together provides the most comprehensive defense for women with dense breasts.
Breast density is determined by a radiologist looking at your mammogram, not by how your breasts feel during a self-exam. Your previous mammography report will state your density level. If you aren't sure, our team can help you review your records.
